UAB women fall to South Alabama
MOBILE, Ala. – Junior guard Fatiha Salaam and senior guard Britney
Jones scored 16 points each for UAB as the Blazer women’s basketball
team fell to the South Alabama Jaguars, 77-64, Monday evening at The
Mitchell Center.
UAB moves to 1-1 overall on the year, while South Alabama improves
its record to 2-0.
The Blazers shot 35.9 percent for the game, including 33.3 percent
from three-point range and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe.
Salaam’s career-high 16 points came on 5-of-9 shooting and 5-of-6
from the free throw line. Jones scored in double figures for the second
consecutive game with 16 points, while also adding seven rebounds,
three assists and three steals.
Junior forward Tamika Dukes tallied nine points while also grabbing a
game-high 11 boards for the Blazers. Junior forward/center Amanda Scott
and sophomore guard Amanda Peterson chipped in eight points apiece.
South Alabama knocked down 36.8 percent of its shots overall, including
30.8 percent from beyond the arc and 86.7 percent from the free throw line.
The Jaguars were led by Shakira Nettles with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting,
including a trio of three-point baskets. Jessica Starling scored 16 points
and Karina Sproal added 15 points to South Alabama’s total.
UAB will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Charlotte, N.C.
to take on the Charlotte 49ers. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT at Halton
Arena.
