UAB readying for Thursday night home game vs. Southern Miss
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After spending the past two weeks on the road, the UAB football team will return home to Legion Field for a Thursday evening contest against Conference USA foe Southern Miss.
The Blazers and the Golden Eagles will kick off at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday at Legion Field. The game will be nationally televised on CBS College Sports.
In addition, the matchup between UAB and Southern Miss will be carried on the Blazers ISP Sports Network and can be heard in the Birmingham area on flagship station WUHT-FM 107.7.
Blazer head coach Neil Callaway, along with C Jake Seitz and DE Bryant Turner, were in attendance at Monday’s media luncheon to recap this past weekend’s loss at Texas A&M and look forward to Thursday’s showdown with Southern Miss.
Obviously disappointed with the 56-19 loss to the Aggies this past Saturday, Callaway found a few bright spots in the Blazers’ performance, along with acknowledging some areas that need improvement.
“I thought we did some things better, but I still think we’re searching in some areas,” said Callaway. “Offensively, we’re doing a nice job running the ball, but we’re struggling throwing it. Defensively, I think we’re doing a pretty good job of stopping the run, but we’re struggling defending the pass.”
Heading into UAB’s third league game of the season, the Blazers are looking to get back on the winning side of things after splitting their first two conference outings with a win over Rice (44-24) and a loss to SMU (35-33).
Callaway knows the challenges that his team will face on Thursday evening and points to the Golden Eagles as one of the top teams in C-USA.
“I think they have an outstanding football team,” said Callaway. “I think Southern Miss and Houston are the two most talented teams in our league. I’ve been very impressed with their speed. Their skill position guys on both sides of the ball can really run. Their quarterback does a good job of managing the game for them.
“Defensively, their speed at linebacker and in the secondary is outstanding. We went over there last year and got embarrassed, 70-14. Hopefully, we’ll get that corrected.”
