Samford begins preparation for Western Carolina

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Samford football team practiced for about an hour in shorts and helmets Monday evening at Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs are preparing for Saturday’s Southern Conference home game against Western Carolina.

Monday is usually an off day for the Bulldogs, but the team’s schedule was changed due to the students being on Fall Break through Tuesday.

Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said he thought his team got off to a good start in its preparation for its first home SoCon game of the season.

“We were able to pick up a day of practice today with the kids being out of school,” Sullivan said. “We decided to give them Sunday off with us getting back so late from Appalachian State. We were able to get in a good day of work.”

The Bulldogs enter this week’s game with a record of 2-2 overall and 0-1 in SoCon play after a 20-7 loss at 10th-ranked Appalachian State on Saturday. Western Carolina is currently 0-4 overall and 0-2 in league play after a 33-14 loss at home to Furman on Saturday.

Sullivan said the Bulldogs were eager to begin working on this week’s game to hopefully bounce back from last week’s setback.

“They realize that we could have played better last week,” Sullivan said. “We did a lot of good things, but we made some mistakes early that we can’t make on the road. But now, we have to get ready for the next one.”

Samford will practice again Tuesday in full pads. The practice is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.

Saturday’s home game against Western Carolina is scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff from Seibert Stadium.
