Ole Miss tops Virginia in Super Regional opener
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Matt Smith’s solo home run in the bottom of
the 12th inning gave Mississippi a 4-3 come-from-behind win over
Virginia on Friday in a super regional game.
Logan Power singled in the tying run in the ninth after an error
and a hit batter gave Ole Miss runners on base with no outs. The
Rebels (43-18) had been 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position to
that point.
Smith’s eighth home run of the season - a first-pitch shot to
left field - came off closer Kevin Arico (2-3), who also gave up
Power’s hit.
The Rebels are now one win from the College World Series in the
best-of-three series against Virginia (46-13-1).
Jake Morgan (4-1) picked up the win after striking out one in
three innings of scoreless one-hit ball.
