MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The wait is over for Alabama slugger
Kent Matthes.
The Colorado Rockies drafted him in Wednesday’s fourth round,
with the 121st pick overall. Matthes tied for the national lead
with 28 homers as a senior and was the Southeastern Conference
player of the year.
He was a four-year starter for the Crimson Tide but had never
been drafted before.
Matthes was the first University of Alabama player picked. He
only had to wait 10 picks into the fourth after his name wasn’t
called on Day 1 when the first three rounds were held.
Former Theodore High School outfielder Kentrail Davis was the
first state player chosen on Tuesday, going to Milwaukee with the
39th overall pick.
