Alabama awaits ruling from NCAA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Plenty of open questions remain about the NCAA’s allegations in Alabama’s textbook case, even beyond the anticipated verdict.

The university’s 160 pages of documents released in March had much of the information blacked out, citing federal privacy laws, including the number of student-athletes who allegedly obtained free textbooks for other students and which sports were involved.

Alabama spokeswoman Deborah Lane told The Tuscaloosa News that federal privacy laws prevent the university from providing media outlets with information that might identify a student.

The university appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions in February. Alabama reported the violations after uncovering them during the 2007 football season, when five players were suspended.
