What A Way To Start Autumn
Today marked the start of Autumn as the vertical rays of the sun crossed directly overhead at the equator. From this point on and till the first day of winter the sun will shine with increasing directness on the southern hemisphere and the angle that the sun will hit the northern hemisphere will become more oblique, and as a result the sunshine will become less intense. That will eventually lead us to winter and will lead the southern hemisphere toward summertime. For now though, it just means some great weather for central Alabama. On the surface weather map a low pressure area is developing just off the coast of South Carolina and a tropical wave is trying to get organized near Puerto Rico. Eventually those 2 systems may become 1, and may developing into some kind of tropical storm. That will mean some heavy rainfall along most of the east coast with the rain spreading into New England by the weekend.
West of all of that action is a huge ridge of high pressure, and that will provide some great weather for us. Nights will be cool and could eventually feature lows in the low 50’s in some sections. Days will be simply beautiful with sunshine and highs in the low and middle 80’s with very low humidity.
The only possible complication here will be the development of a closed low in the upper atmopshere. That feature will be associated with the east coast development, and could lead to some clouds here Friday into Saturday with just a slight chance a little rain could fall over the northeast corner of Alabama.
