2010 will get off to a very cold start.  The nights will be especially frigid.

Cold air will be the main weather headline across central Alabama as we get used to 2010.  Daytime temperatures most of the next 7 days will struggle to rise above the 30’s, and all nights after tonight will feature a hard freeze with lows at least a couple of nights reaching the teens.  Definately “bundle-up” time coming up.  There will be some light precipitation falling overnight and perhaps for a couple of hours after daybreak.  Right now everything to the west of us is just rain, and all of our temperatures are currently above freezing.  However the air will be getting a little colder here, and that could mean a changeover to snow showers for a brief time in some areas.  Precipitation amounts will vary from zero north of Jefferson and Cullman counties to may .10” in Greene, Hale, and Chilton counties.  Could anyone see the grassy areas turn white.  I think there is a slight chance of that, but it will be very limited in areal extent.  And if it should occur, it would probably be in those previously mentioned areas where the precipitation is a little heavier.
From Saturday through Wednesday, it will just be dry and quite cold.  But there is some indication a low pressure may form in the Gulf of Mexico by Thursday, and that could mean some snow here.  Stay tuned, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
