January 07, 2010

Main problems now are arriving arctic air and possibility of ice on roadways.

Snow accumulation was very limited in areal coverage today with measurable amounts mainly across the highway 278 corridor.  However some snow was seen almost viewing-area wide and there were spotty dustings.  Now our concern turns to the rapid-temperature drop and the possibility of icing on bridges, overpasses, expressway ramps and some roads.

Light snow Thu. afternoon, lots of cold air follows

I don’t really want to emphasize accumulations with this event, since I don’t think there will be much.  Main thing will be condition of the roads as the arctic air arrives.  Whatever is wet or slightly slushy will freeze.

Bitter cold pattern continues.  Some snow Thursday.  Oh and of course Roll Tide!

Moisture will be limited with Thursday’s system so heavy snow accumlations are not expected.  Most areas will receive less than an inch.  Some spots may get very little.  However there is still a chance the roads could freeze because frigid arctic air will follow on the heels of the system.

When and how much snow

Snow showers will arrive in west Alabama around mid morning tomorrow and spread east through the rest of the day.

January 05, 2010

Another super-cold night in progress.  Still that possibility of snow on Thursday.

Main questions for Thursday concern how much precipitation will fall and exactly what the temperature will be as the snow comes to an end.

With the help of the sunshine, many spots creeped above freezing this afternoon.

The moderation will continue Wednesday with high temperatures averaging out near 40.  Then the forecast challenge begins.  Fast moving system arrives Thursday with a period of snow likely.
Precipitation amounts will not be substantial, but roads could become slick.

Unusually cold for Alabama

The extremely cold temperatures will get much worse before we thaw out.

January 04, 2010

Bitter cold pattern firmly established.  Worst of the outbreak may come late in the week.

At least Tuesday will look better than Monday with a full day of bright sunshine.  It won’t help much in the temperature department with highs only nudging above freezing over about half of the area.  That is still slightly better than Monday when temperatures failed to leave the 20’s in most areas.

Crazy cold weather to continue through the weekend.  Snow still likely for Thursday.

Coldest weather of this siege will come at the end of the week and into the weekend.  Temperatures both Friday and Saturday will not rise above the 20’s, and lows will be close to 10.  The big question with the snow system is how much moisture it will have to work with.

Cold just doesn’t cover it

I don’t know any other way than to say it’s painfully cold outside today and it looks like it will get worse before it gets better.

January 03, 2010

The historic cold snap of 2010 continues…snow still a good bet for later this week.

Worst of the cold snap may well come on Friday when daytime highs will likely only be in the 20’s, and nightime lows could drop to the low teens.  Actually if we get enough of a snow cover, lows Friday night could drop to 10 or lower in some areas.

January 02, 2010

Two headlines this week: Tide going for the championship and bitter cold weather here at home.

This week may well go into the record books as one of our coldest ever.  There is not even a chance of a night holding above freezing through next weekend.  Most days will be in the 30’s, and yes there could be some snow Thursday and Thursday night.

January 01, 2010

Serious cold snap to last into next weekend.

Several nights in the teens, and days in the 30’s.  This cold snap has a shot at breaking a couple of records for duration.  Most days will be dry, though there is a chance of a period of snow Wednesday night into Thursday.

December 31, 2009

2010 will get off to a very cold start.  The nights will be especially frigid.

Some showers of rain or rain turning to snow will accompany the first wave of cold air arriving overnight and toward daybreak.  There will be a chance of more important snow toward Thursday of next week.

Colder for the New Year

Expect drier conditions for this afternoon but the clouds will remain with mild temperatures.

December 30, 2009

Rather miserable weather night in progress. Colder air still on the way.

Coldest weather likely early next week with highs potentially down in the 30’s and lows in the teens.  Still a chance of a rain-snow mixture for a few hours late Thursday night into early Friday morning.

Wet Wednesday night for central Alabama; maybe a flurry to welcome in 2010.

Most of the rain will fall tonight, though clouds will likely linger most of Thursday.  Fast moving system in the upper atmosphere will try to give us a little rain-snow mixture as we ring in the new year.  No accumulation is expected.

Rain moving in

Light rain will begin to move in from the west for this afternoon.

December 29, 2009

Wet Wed night, much colder New Year’s weekend

Much of next week still looking mighty cold. Flurries looking less likely on Friday, though it is still too early to tell if a bona fide chance of any snow will occur next week.

2009 will close out with a wet spell;  the first week of 2010 will be very cold.

The interesting “El Nino” weather pattern continues.  Our weather will stay quite active for the next few weeks.  Indeed even the next 10-12 days will bring us 1 wet storm, a real cold snap, and at least some chance of seeing a bit of snow.

Temps warming up

It is still expected to be a chilly afternoon but slightly warmer than yesterday and tomorrow should be even warmer.

December 28, 2009

Cold night in progress with temperatures headed down into the 20’s.

Temperatures will moderate a little by midweek…just in time for the next rain maker which looks to primarily strike Wednesday night.  Cold air will be firmly entrenched again by New Year’s Day, and its going to hang around through the weekend.

Active weather pattern continues this week with more precipitation chances.

Wettest period appears to be Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Cold air will continue to dominate the first part of the week and also the New Year’s weekend.

Feels every bit of winter

Despite plenty of sunshine today t will be very cold and windy.

December 26, 2009

There will be some sunshine today with cool temperatures.
