Spring sprinkler check-up

The recent rainfall we have received has prompted me to turn the sprinkler system off for a while.  Now is a good time to go through all of your different zones and make sure it is working properly.  Sometimes the heads can get shifted or even loose during the winter months.  You can always detect a leak by the amount of pressure each zone has.  If one zone’s outputs aren’t like the others, then you may have a leak.  Repairing irrigation lines is fairly simple using PVC pipe and glue.  There are several reputable sprinkler companies in town that could repair it for you as well.  Also, if you have added pots to your landscaping-they can be easily included in the sprinkler’s range as well.  They make small heads designed to be placed in pots to ensure a good soaking when the sprinkler comes on.  The small pipe can be run through the bottom of the pot so it is completely hidden.

There is some disagreement among experts as to when is the best time of the day to water.  It’s advised to do early in the morning before sunrise while pressure is still good before everyone is up and taking showers.  An evening period works well too, but can lead to fungus on some of the plants or grass when the water is sitting until the next day.  The most important part is coverage.  Make sure every square inch of your lawn is covered by the heads.  It might be best to trade out some of the heads for new ones. Many different spray patterns are made, so there is one that suits your situation best.
