September-kitchens
This month our subject is kitchens. My last blog entry was all about countertops as we were talking about tile. Again, the industry standard is granite-but there are many other choices. Cabinets are a crucial part of any kitchen. There are so many choices here as well. Finishes, styles, colors, species are different options when selecting kitchens. Cabinets are about the most expensive part of the kitchen. Nice cabinetry for an average size kitchen can cost over 15,000.00. A few years ago I was trying to decide which style cabinetry to use in fixer-upper. Cost was a major factor-but I didn’t want it to look cheap though. Low and behold-all I had to do was walk in a major home improvement store down the road. A lady purchased a kitchen full of cabinets-but after they arrived she decided she didn’t like them. Well the store had all these cabinets made specifically for her kitchen-so they put them on the showroom floor at 75% off! Well they didn’t exactly fit-but the store consultant helped me make them work. Some of the wall cabinets were made for a higher ceiling than this kitchen. We just placed them on the countertop under an ordered filler-Walla! You can’t do this everywhere because it reduces workspace-very important. However, it did work for the corner units. When it was all said and done-I had purchased 25,000.00 worth of cabinets for just 7,000.00! It took more time to complete as we had to make some modifications-but it was worth it! Anytime you see cabinets on the show-room floor marked clearance-don’t assume you can’t make them work. Sometimes you have to get creative. It can really pay off!
