New type of backerboard for tile installations

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

One very important item to remember before installing tile is to check the substrate.  The substrate is the base on which the tile will be installed on.  If you are doing a tile floor the substrate would be wood or concrete.  This foundation must be solid and secure.  If it’s not-then tile will crack over the years and will have to be replaced much sooner than expected.  One way to secure this base is to backerboard.  Backerboard has come in 2 different materials-mainly concrete and fiber.  I spotted a new type of backerboard in a local home improvement store last week.  This backerboard is thin it comes in a roll!  Now if you have ever used concrete backerboard you know how difficult and heavy it is while cutting and installing it.  This new kind is much lighter.  The direction claim that is can be used for many types of installations-including flooring!  I would be a bit cautious using this on some flooring projects.  August is “tile month” on the blog and we will talk much more in detail about backerboards and installation.
