Try Something New: Pickled Okra

Okra can be fried, grilled and yes, even pickled. Try it! You just might like it.
Fried okra—yum. Grilled okra—delightful. Pickled okra—what? You mean you want me to eat something that’s definitely meant to be fried that’s soaked in a liquid and is most definitely slimy? Absolutely not.
I realize that’s the response most of you probably have to pickled okra. However, I can assure you it is not slimy and, in fact, it is quite tasty and crisp. One bite into one whole, pickled okra and you’ll hear a delightful crunch, taste the brininess of a pickle but know on some level that you’re actually eating a southern staple.
So how do you eat pickled okra? Plain is definitely my favorite. But you can toss them into a burrito, slice them into pasta salad or use it to garnish a Bloody Mary. You can even use the pickled okra juice in salad dressing to give it a briny punch.
They come in mild and spicy varieties and you can order them online for much cheaper than they are priced in stores. There are also lots of recipes online if you want to pickle your own. So try something new! Who knows? You just might like it.
