Three Tasty Events, One Scrumptious October Weekend
This is a huge food weekend! From Thursday-Saturday, October 9-11, 2008, you can find an inexpensive food-centered event to attend each day.
First up: St. George’s 27th Annual Middle Eastern Food Festival (formerly known as the Lebanese Food Festival). It’s happening October 9-11, 2008, at Saint George Melkite Catholic Church at 425 16th Avenue South. Lunch is served from 10:30am-2:00pm. Dinner is served from 4:00-9:00pm. Attendance is free, food items vary from $2.00-$16.00. The menu includes Kibbe, Rolled Grape Leaves, Baked Chicken, Falafel and more. I highly recommend this event for its delicious food. For the first time, the church is staffing a drive through, much like the one at the Greek Festival.
Second: The 32nd Annual Oktoberfest. It’s happening October 10-11, 2008, from 5:00pm-Midnight at the FDSK German Club located at 2318 2nd Avenue North. I recommend this event for the pure spectacle of German attire, dance and beer. There’s food, too. Trust me, this one gets more entertaining the later it gets. Attendance is free, food prices vary.
And Finally: Harvest Brew in Homewood. It’s happening October 11, 2008, from 5:00-7:00pm in Homewood’s SOHO Square. Offerings include the newest import, domestic and microbrews in Alabama. There will also be some familiar beers. Beer tables will be set up on the patios of Grey House Grille, Jackson’s Bar & Bistro and Tria Market. Wristbands are $15 at the gate, or you can purchase them in advance at Grey House Grille and Tria Market. The event benefits the Birmingham Food Bank/United Way’s “America’s Second Harvest” project, a nationwide network of food banks that supply food to homeless shelters, soup kitchens, residential facilities for the elderly and the handicapped, as well as shelters for abused women and children.
Don’t say there’s nothing to do in Birmingham!
