Good Beer from Good People

Good Beer from Good People

Frothy, flavorful and freezing cold, there’s nothing like a good beer made by Good People.

I’ve had a lot of good beer, and a lot of bad, watery beer, too.  But the people at Good People Brewing Company mean what they advertise: they make good beer.  I vividly remember the first time, and the second time, I tried a beer made by this Birmingham, small-batch brewery.  The first was at the 2008 Magic City Brewfest at Sloss Furnaces.  We had already tried a few other beers, most of which were tasty.  As we approached the stand serving Good People beer we heard everyone talking.

“Have you tried it yet?”
“It’s really good.”
“I hear they make it here.”
“Wonder how they got that past the ABC Board?”

We approached the stand and asked for “that one, please.”  It was an amber brew being served out of a tap labeled “Alabama 75”. Once we tasted its balanced yet malty goodness, we knew, we were hooked.  Now they still don’t have a name for this beer, right now it’s just known as the “amber.”  If you read their website, you’ll soon discover why they’re not too worried about marketing.  They’re not in this to produce beer for a nationwide audience; they want to stick with small batches to maximize the flavor.  That’s just fine by me.
The second time I got to try Good People beers was this past weekend at Homewood’s Harvest Brew in SOHO Square.  The Good People made another fine showing of beers, this time, there were three: a stellar IPA, an amazingly delicious Roggenbier, and my favorite, an incredible Oatmeal Coffee Stout.  Rich, but not too heavy, it had a nice flavor of coffee and the warm, hardiness you feel as you eat a bowl of oatmeal, yet somehow it was light going down.  So far the only places I know of that serve the Oatmeal Coffee Stout are J.Clyde and The Five Points Grill.  That’s just fine by me, too.

I love the fact that this home-grown brewery wants to stay local.  It’s Birmingham’s network of local restaurants and food makers that makes this city a delight for the palate.  And it’s good people like you who read this blog that keep them going.  So kick back, and have a good time with some Good People, you won’t be disappointed.
