They must have seen me coming!
Yes, I’m one of those people. The one who has a hard time looking away when someone is standing in front of Wal-Mart with a box full of puppies and a sign that reads “FREE”. I’m a lot like a kid in these instances. “Oohhh, I want one, I want one!“ And even with age, I haven’t seemed to mature out of that instinct. So it didn’t surprise my husband when I texted him on Monday saying, “free rabbits! can I bring one home?“ My husband, being just as immature in this area as I am, said “sure!“
I was at Noccalula Falls shooting a story for work. They have a petting zoo there with tons (and I mean tons!) of rabbits. As I petted and played with several of the baby bunnies, the lady taking care of them said, “please take some home!“ I said, “Seriously?“ And she said, “Yes! They reproduce every 32 days with each female having 8-10 bunnies at a time.“ So before I knew it I had picked out two females (at least we think so, we’ll know soon enough!), and she had outfitted me with a makeshift cage and a little rabbit food for the road. My neice and nephew both have birthdays coming up in a few weeks, so I justified this impulsive act by saying I would give the bunnies to my soon to be 5 year old neice and 7 year old nephew for their birthdays. But of course, they have three dogs, so the bunnies would have to live at my house!
So now I have a cute little gray bunny who’s been named Elizabeth and a little white bunny who goes by Chelsea. My husband, who was away on a business trip when I picked them up, couldn’t wait to get home to see the new additions. When he arrived, he rushed to the cage to see them. He got them out and very soon realized, “they don’t do much.“ He’s right. They pretty much just sit there and chew on stuff, they hop around a little, but they sure are soft and sweet. So now, we’re looking for plans to build them a cool condo and I hope to get them litter box trained. Maybe next time, I’ll think twice about bringing home a stray….I doubt it!
