Building the Rabbits a Home
So now that we are the proud parents of two baby bunnies…they need a place to live. The kind lady who gave them to me gave me a makeshift cage that she ssaid they wouldn’t be able to stay in long because they’d quicky outgrow it. Boy was she right. Rabbits grow fast! So I went shopping online (My favorite place to at least start a shopping spree) and I quickly realized that rabbit abodes aren’t cheap! The really cool rabbit hutches were two story with an indoor area with solid walls to give rabbits some much needed privacy. But these ran a few hundred bucks! So, being the handy person I am, I decided to build one myself. I tried to draw out a plan so I’d know exactly what supplues I needed and how to start. But I have no ability to think (or draw ) three-dimensionally. So I gave up and kind of guessed what I’d need. The plan that went underneath to catch waste would be important and it was the only thing I didn’t think I’d be able to build. So I ordered one (on line or course) and designed my whole plans around it. The pan was 24"x36”. So, I headed off to my nearby home improvement store…quickly spent $120 on supplies. I was a little shocked at the cost, but proud that I would save about 50% building the hutch myself. Little did I know I would return to the store several times. I headed home and broke out all my woodworking tools and I started to cut and nail and screw. Right off the bat, I made a mistake. I made my hutch 24"x36” but that was my outside measurement…so my waste pan…would not fit underneath! There went $17 down the drain and I’d still have to figure out how to make my own custom sized pan.
I’ll spare you the rest of the 3 day drama…but I finally finished the hutch. I went back to the story several times to return and buy stuff I didnt’ realize I’d need till I needed it. Still trying to figure out the pan problem…the one I’ve rigged leaves rabbit tinkle and poo running down the legs of my hutch and ending up on the floor of my laundry room. But hey it look’s pretty cool!
By the way, the kids (my 2 year old son, my 5 year old niece and my 7 year old nephew) who I got the rabbits for have already lost interest. So it looks like I’ve got 2 new pets!
