A Most Unusual Christmas Gift

» 2 Comments | Post a Comment

Late as usual, I have been patrolling the internet this week, joining the minions who are turning to cyber-shopping to check off everything on their Christmas list.

I googled Christmas gifts for young women, hoping to find some trendy, uber-impressive gift that would wow my younger sister who lives in L.A. (as in California, not lower Alabama) and is about to graduate from UCLA.

This article written by Jessica Ashley posted on yahoo, under the website’s “Healthy Living” section was the first result to pop up.

Read it and tell me what you think. FYI - I decided to get my sister a necklace.

I am not sure whether to let out a giddy little laugh or raise a woman power fist in the air at the news that Planned Parenthood of Indiana will be offering gift certificates for sale as holiday gifts.

The gift certificates are available for purchase in values from $25 to $100 and can be used for all services the organization provides, whether ‘tis the season for pap smears, contraception or routine medical visits and procedures (yes, including abortions).

Planned Parenthood of Indiana’s president and CEO, Betty Cockrum, said the offering is out of concern that women will forego basic medical needs during stressed economic times. She added that women in particular are likely to gas up the car or put food on the table than tend to their own healthcare.

Although Cockrum said she would be “amazed if a dime of it goes toward an abortion,“ the program is, not surprisingly, under fire. The director of one anti-abortion organization called the gift certificates “lethal,“ asserting that the campaign contradicts the meaning of Christmas, which is “about the celebration of human life.“

Planned Parenthood chapters in Illinois, New York, Alaska, and Michigan are also considering offering gift certificates.

I think you got the right gift.
A gift certificate for a free pap smear might be a little too personal. ha ha
