Things to do in Birmingham in September

WINGS & WHEELS 75th ANNIVERSARY
The Wings & Wheels 75th Anniversary Air Show & Car Show will be held at the Bessemer Airport on September 20th & 21st.  We will showcase the famous Aeroshell Aerobatic Team, Suzanne Oliver will be skywriting over the Birmingham skies, Greg Koontz will do his daring aerobatics, the P51 Mustang and other warbirds will gather to create a day of thrilling entertainment for all.  In addition to the great car expo and airplanes, there will be a children’s area, climbing wall, vendors, military & civilian aircraft on display and plenty of activities, fun and food for everyone to enjoy.  Tickets: Adults $15, Children(6-12) $10, Under 6 admitted FREE. All profits go to the Southern Museum of Flight and BAC Flight Scholarships
Take exit 6 from I-459 and follow the signs to a great day of fun! 
Gates open at 10:00 - come early and bring your lawn chair.

A brief History of our airshow: 
This year’s show is very exciting as it is our 75th Anniversary!
The Birmingham Aero Club began producing these airshows in 1932 to showcase aviation to the general public and to provide a source of great family entertainment for all to enjoy.  The airshows or “Air Carnivals” as they were called, originated in 1932 at the site which is now known as the Birmingham Airport.  The shows, with their daring barnstormers and wing-walking acts attracted as many as 200 thousand spectators each year and continued to grow in popularity as a nationally-known attraction.  The shows were suspended during WWII and resumed again with a grand show in 1946. In the 1970’s it was necessary to move the show to the outlying airports due to the growing air traffic at Birmingham.  The Aero Club also saw the need to diversify and added the “wheels” portion of the show which is a Classic Automobile Show and competition which provides additional entertainment throughout the day.  There is truly something for everyone so come out and help us support this great Birmingham Tradition!!  See you There…
