The Birmingham Zoo’s Jamie the Gorilla

Jamie is the resident gorilla at the Birmingham Zoo.  This sweet boy is 23 years old, 5 feet tall, and weighs around 320 pounds.  He is a Western Lowland Gorilla and a Silverback.  (You can tell a male from a female by the color on their backs!)  Jamie has been with the Birmingham Zoo since 1994.  He eats fruits, veggies and grain.  Did you know that gorillas are native to the Congo in Africa?  Unfortunately their habitats are being destroyed and gorillas are on the endangered species list.  If you’d like to help gorillas like Jamie you can donate your old cell phones to the zoo!  Also…zoo memberships are a great way to help all of the animals at the zoo.  For information call 205-879-0409 or go to http://www.birminghamzoo.com/.
