Today in Washington, we’ll see something we’ve never seen before. An African-American will be sworn in as president, with the support of Americans of all races, ages, men and women. George Bush is waking up for his last time at the White House. By Tonight, Barack Obama will move in as president.
On the eve of his swearing in former rivals embraced.
Barack Obama honored John McCain for a career of service.
Mr. Obama said “join us in making this bipartisan dinner not just an inaugural tradition, but a new way of doing the business in this city.“
The city is buzzing.
Security ramped up overnight.
Only walkers and metro-riders get to a packed National Mall.
Jumbotrons will show Barack Obama take the oath on the Bible Abraham Lincoln used for his swearing in.
Listen for echoes of Lincoln today, a new vision of a more perfect union.
This was Sunday.
Mr. Obama said “if we could just recognize ourselves in one another and bring everyone together, maybe, just maybe, we might perfect our union in the process.“
Last night, George W. Bush returned to the White House from dinner for the last time.
He and his successor will travel to today’s ceremony together.
The nation will watch. The world will watch.
George Bush’s job is over. He flies back to Texas a private citizen.
Barack Obama leads the nation and a hopeful Capitol parties tonight.
