As the country welcomes its new president many are admiring the soon-to-be first lady.
Michelle Obama has been compared to Jacqueline Kennedy: smart, elegant, sophisticated, yet able to identify with the average woman.
We first learned about Michelle Obama’s ‘style’ on the campaign trail.
Then, there was that appearance on “The View.”
The dress she wore on “The View” sold out almost immediately as women all over the country tried to imitate her being fashionable on a budget.
“She understands the current economic situation. She’s in touch with the American woman in doing so, and that really sends a very strong message,“ said consignment shop owner Tina Hayden.
It’s a message we’ve seen on dozens of magazines.
But the photo everyone’s waiting for is Michelle Obama’s inaugural ball gown.
Designers have dreamed up all sorts of ideas.
The curator of the Smithsonian’s “First Ladies Collection” tells us the first lady’s gown traditionally reflects the times but in a very classic way.
“You’re going to choose something that you like, something that you’re comfortable in, something you think is appropriate, but also something you think is going to be pretty. You know all eyes gonna be on you. These photos will follow you to the grave,“ said curator Lisa Kathleen Graddy.
It’s impossible to talk about Michelle Obama’s style without considering her substance.
“It is her height. It’s the way she carries herself. It is the tone and tenor of the type of conversation she has with people and the way she enunciates her words. She just seems like a very strong woman,“ said Michelle Bernard of the Independent Women’s Forum.
Often compared to Jacqueline Kennedy, Obama rose from a blue collar background to an ivy league lawyer.
Michelle Obama has said as first lady she intends to speak out on women’s issues, national service and military families.
At the Democratic National Convention she spoke passionately about her children.
“They’re the first things I think about when I wake up in the morning, and the last thing I think about before I go to bed at night,“ said Obama.
Mother. Lawyer. Community worker.
And now a new title, first lady.
