Tuesday Mayor Larry Langford pardoned all arrested while protesting segregation during the 1960's.BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—- Tuesday Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford offered pardons to all arrested while challenging segregation laws in the 1960’s.
He announced the pardons at the beginning of the Birmigham City Council meeting.
A handful of civil rights icons were on hand to accept the city’s apology, including Bishop Calvin Woods and Tommy Wrenn.
Langford said that recently a reporter pointed out that the city had never pardoned those arrested in Birmingham during the civil rights movement.
He admitted he does not expect many to ask for their arrests to be erased from their records because they wear it “as a badge of honor”.
Langford went on to say the pardons were a prelude to the unveiling of new Civil Rights Trail signs at Kelley Ingram Park next Monday.
