BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—- Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper announced a double digit crime decline through the first three quarters of 2009.

Overall crime was down 12% through the end of September.

Homicides had dropped 25% from the same point in 2008.

The greatest decline came in automobile thefts, at 32%.

Chief Roper said the overall crime decrease was the greatest the city had seen in at least a decade.

Dalton Smith is the President of the Birmingham Business Alliance and added Tuesday that numbers should help them recruit new businesses to Birmingham.
