MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Farmers Market Authority has
launched a pilot program to allow food stamp recipients to use
their electronic benefit transfer or EBT cards at three produce
markets in Alabama.
AFMA helped farmers get certified as food stamp vendors thru the
U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The participating farmers markets are located in Dallas,
Jefferson and Macon counties. According to AFMA officials, buying
locally grown produce helps local farmers and the community.
The EBT pilot program also allows customers to purchase produce
with their credit cards.
The agency anticipates expanding the program statewide.
