Skywalk work closes down Richard Arrington Blvd. near BJCC
BIRMINGHAM-The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex is continuing work on a skywalk to connect meeting rooms in the North and South Exhibit Halls with the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel. Lanes will be closed on Richard Arrington Boulevard just north of Ninth Avenue through Friday as work begins on a 122-foot section above the road.
The street will be closed in its entirety Tuesday, Dec. 2. One or more lanes will be closed for the remainder of the week, reopening at noon Friday, Dec. 5. Periodic lane closures may continue for the next two to three months as the walkway is completed.
The $8 million skywalk corridor system will enable visitors covered access to meeting rooms and exhibit halls. It will also provide internal access to the BJCC Arena from the hotel and proposed entertainment center. In addition to two exterior bridges, renovations are also being made to interior corridors.
“The primary goal of the project is to substantially increase the use of our meeting rooms by making them more convenient to access for convention guests,“ said BJCC Executive Director Jack Fields.
The project is set to be complete in July of 2009.
