Sewage Backup Closes A Shelby County School
Published: October 8, 2008
A smelly mess causes an academic one, and closes the doors at Helena Intermediate School in Shelby County.
That’s after a Helena sewage pumping station malfunctioned sending a sewage backup into the middle school on County Road 52.
Their 800 students were out of school today and will be out through Friday. Monday was a scheduled holiday. So teh students get an extra long weekend.
Once it was discovered sewage had seeped into bathrooms, hallways and classrooms, crews from Servpro were brought in to clean the place up.
They’ll inventory the damage, take photos, and toss out what can’t be salvaged. They’ll also sanitize the building in order for staff, teachers and students to return to a safe and clean environment.
Friday would have been an end to the nine week grading period. Students were supposed to be tested, but now those tests will have to be rescheduled.
There’s still a question whether students will have to make up these forced vacation days at a later date.
