Schrenker staying longer in hospital after suicide attempt

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - An Indiana financial manager suspected of staging his death in a plane crash is expected to remain hospitalized until early next week.

U.S. Marshals say 38-year-old Marcus Schrenker was in stable condition Friday at a Tallahassee hospital, recovering from a suicide attempt.

Once released, Schrenker will be taken to Pensacola for a court appearance on charges intentionally crashing his plane and making a phony distress call. Schrenker’s plane crashed in north Florida Sunday, but his body wasn’t inside, and officials think he faked the crash to escape financial ruin and divorce.

Autbhorities suspect he parachuted from his small plane in Alabama.

Schrenker was captured Tuesday night at a Florida Panhandle campground, suffering from a self-imposed gash to the wrist.

When he returns to Indiana, he’s likely to face some angry investors.

One Atlanta man alleges Schrenker scammed up to $135,000 from his parents’ retirement fund. Charles Kinney says over time he’s found Schrenker to be a “pathological liar.“

Schrenker controlled at least three businesses, providing financial advice and managing portfolios worth millions. Authorities in Indiana have been investigating allegations he charged clients exorbitant fees that they weren’t aware they would face.

According to court documents, Schrenker sent a frantic e-mail a month ago to plaintiffs in a lawsuit against him, saying his career was over thanks to “one letter in a trade error.“ He adds that he had “so many people yelling” at him that he “couldn’t figure out what was up or down.“
