Rant could mean jail time for Langford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Former Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford could face a tougher sentence because of statements he made after his federal bribery conviction and removal from office last week.

Standing outside the courthouse after the guilty verdicts, Langford blamed his conviction on racism and the media. He accused jurors of sleeping during the trial and failing to look at the evidence, and he criticized two main government witnesses.

Langford attorney Glennon Threatt and a law professor both say Langford’s words could come back to haunt him. They say judges can impose tougher penalties on people who fail to show remorse or who show a lack of respect for the law.

A judge has yet to set a sentencing date for the 63-year-old Langford, who faces years in prison.

Attykat…poor ignorant little soul. The sentence that Mr. Langford faces is not based on race, creed, sex, age, nor people’s like or dislike. It is based on accumulated crimes. There were originally 101 indictments, later reduced and combined to 60. He was found guilty on all 60. Each of these crimes require certain jail time for each one. That means that if he had 600 crimes, then the total jail time would be 10X more. I know you believe his crimes are not as serious as someone else’s crimes, but justice isn’t dispensed based on “mine is worse than his.“ Crime should equal punishment. Period. If Mr. Langford redirected public funds for his own gain, which is bribery, and only did it once, then his sentence would be little if none. Crime is crime; whether it is bribery or murder. How many people, right now, in Jeffco are out of work because the county is near bankrupt? Do you know anyone who were laid-off from Jeffco because there isn’t enough money to pay everyone? That is a crime. He took money and food out of thousands of mouths—maybe not directly, but because of his greed and avarice. Guilty, honey, now move on.

I will say it one more time.
I think Langford is on crack.

Atty - Agree that the possible sentence is ridiculous. We have serious offenders who get away with a few years behind bars. However, he screwed up and took advantage of his position. He’s a public servant and did anything BUT serve his community. The guy should be ousted and our community should seek to elect a better qualified candidate for mayor.

BUT PLEASE - LEAVE RACE OUT OF IT. Jeez, we’ve had a black mayor in Birmingham for as long as I can remember. It’s not an issue in this case.

I think that if the judicial system handed out harder punishments to criminals—ALL CRIMINALS—maybe our society would be better off.  If he stole it doesn’t matter what he stole.  He is a grown up and SHOULD know better.  He deserves whatever he gets.

If he BOUGHT the clothes there wouldn’t be a problem.  He was given the clothes and other things as a BRIBE!!

I don’t care if he is white, black, or purple,if he had been found innocent he wouldn’t have had a problem with who was on the jury.  He starts yelling about it when it doesn’t go his way.  Sounds like a three year old.

My clothes don’t cost as much as he is but, I know that I am honest and I worked hard and PAID for what I own!!

This is a barbaric system of Justice!  Noone deserves to be jailed 804 years, when they have not killed a soul.  Why would a sentence of 804 years be imposed when our lives do not extend that far.  This is indicative of a very sick and heinously hiddeous mindset to have sentencing guidelines with such idiotic destinations known not to be reachable.  A 236,000 dollar crime(if he did it) does not warrant a sentence laced with that much stupidity.  It is a known fact in this country, that if a jury said it, does not make it so.  You found O.J guilty after he was proven innoncent by a jury.  You said Rodney King was resisting arrest when the WHOLE WORLD saw him being unmercifully beaten.  You let Cherry go until it was time for him to die, and you murdered 23 year old Frederick Jackon in 1993 in his jail cell in Pleasant Grove, and you said he committed suicide; You got klansmen as your judges meting out klan justice, and you sentence Atif Mitchell to a life sentence when you knew he was not the shooter, you disbarred a lawyer 5 years for a 7000 dollar discrepancy yet you let another go to jail and get his license back in 3 years who bilked clients out of millions, and now you bask in your false glory that you have brought another one to your demonic form of justice.  Alabama you are a criminal state and the whole state should be incarcerated!!!

The person who said this man should get life without parole should be ashamed of him or herself.  That kind a punihsment is for a serial killer, not someone who bought some damn clothes.  You are either stupid or you are evil or you culd be stupid and evil.
