Private lakes project planned in south Alabama

BAY MINETTE, Ala. (AP) - A group of investors has applied for a permit to dam several large creeks and destroy 121 acres of wetlands to create four private fishing lakes on 5,000 acres in north Baldwin County.

The permit application says the project would submerge more than two miles of streams.

B.T. Roberts, a real estate agent who represents the investor group, says the lakes would be used by a private fishing club.

He says the new proposal avoids the most pristine portions of the wetlands.

Casi Callaway, director of Mobile Baykeeper, says the environmental group will file comments with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers against the proposal.
