Pelham, Ala.—- This Kimberly man, 29 year old Bart Johnson, is behind bars, charged with fatally shooting, Pelham police officer Philip Davis.
Pelham Police Chief Tommy Thomas said, “At approximately 11:50PM Officer Philip Davis was shot and fatally wounded during traffic stop on I-65.“
Authorities say it happened here, closing down the highway during morning traffic for the investigation. Johnson has been charged with capitol murder. Officials are confident they have the right man.
Shelby Co. District Attorney, Robbie Owens said, “We are satisfied that the facts we have regarding this arrest are well more than sufficient for probable cause.“
Johnson reportedly fled the crime scene ditching a car in Inglenook. Some hours later he was in custody, along with his brother, Trussville police officer Bill Johnson. The pair were reportedly picked up while on their way back to Pelham so the suspect could turn himself in.
While investigators are being tight-lipped about details on the crime and the evidence their thoughts are with Officer Davis and with his family.
Chief Thomas said, “I know they have a strong family network, they’re being well-cared for right now and surely we’re part of the family as well and we’ll do whatever we can do to help the family.“
Owens said, “We all will miss Philip deeply. He was a good man.“
As for Officer Bill Johnson, he’s been placed on administrative leave from the Trussville police department. He has not been charged in this case and his boss doesn’t suspect he’s involved in any way with Officer Davis’ death. The suspect, Bart Johnson, is being held at the Shelby County jail. He’s being held without bond.
