No wireless 911 service

Wireless callers in the Tuscaloosa area who are AT&T subscribers (formerly Cingular Wireless) are currently not able to reach local 911 call centers. These subscribers may either get a busy signal or no response at all.

Capt Jeff Hartley, TPD Communications Division commander, received a call from AT&T officials in Nashville informing him of the problem. The outage occurred around 1:20pm. Other counties in Alabama have been affected and it is possible the problem is statewide or larger. TPD officials have no further details on the outage at this time. It is unknown how long the interruption of service will last.

In the meantime, AT&T wireless callers needing emergency services should call their local law enforcement agency direct. Those numbers are:
Tuscaloosa Police Department (205) 349-2121
Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (205) 752-0616
Northport Police Department (205) 339-6600

AT&T is aware of the problem and working to bring this problem to a quick resolution. In the mean time callers from AT&T devices are asked to call the Tuscaloosa Sheriff’s Office 752-0616 in an emergency until this problem is resolved.

Callers from Sprint, Nextel, Verizon and Southern Linc devices are still able to dial 911 from their wireless devices.
