Mercury Discovered In Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA—-Tuscaloosa’s Mayor, Walter Maddox said it was a “chaotic day” after Mercury was discovered in several places The Environmental Protection Agency has been investigating the presence if Mercury in Tuscaloosa since September 18.

Wednesday, a person of interest told police the harmful metal could be found on city sidewalks and grass. Mercury was found at four seperate sites: near 1904 University Boulevard, the site of the former Riverview Treatment Plant and in a wooded area near Jack Warner Parkway.
Maddox said, the water supply is safe and no one has become sick. 19th Avenue from University to Fourth will be closed until the Mercury is cleaned up. The investigation is still ongoing, but authorities would not say how the harmful subtance got there or how the person being questioned is connected.
