GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Sunday marked the final official day of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. Although the season was more active than normal, only Hurricanes
Gustav and Ike brought significant flooding and some wind damage to Mississippi.

The season began June 1 and produced 16 named storms, eight hurricanes and five major hurricanes. Three of those hurricanes pummeled Cuba. Gustav targeted coastal Louisiana, and Ike slammed into Galveston, Texas, causing major damage.

An average season has 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major, Category 3 or above, hurricanes.
