Thousands of evacuees from Hurricane Gustav are beginning their trek back home.

A large group of evacuees boarded buses, and departed Fair Park in Birmingham just before 10 a.m. Friday, September 5, 2008.
And, at the BJCC, about 1,500 evacuees boarded buses for Louisiana, starting about an hour later.

Governor Bob Riley was at the BJCC to see the evacuees off.
Buses are leaving area shelters in a staggered schedule, as to not have all the buses on the highway at the same time.
