Video: Grandmother killed during police chase

A police pursuit that started in Midfield and ended in Brighton killed a grandmother Wednesday evening.

The scene unfolded in the parking lot of Dubose Repair Shop on Huntsville Avenue around 5:30pm.

A suspect driving a black car was running from Fairfield police.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office tells us that suspect had three outstanding warrants.

Eye witness Renay Boykin saw what happened next:

“He ran the stop sign and went straight thru the intersection,“ she recalls.

The black car roared through the intersection - straight into a red truck, flipping it upside down.

“It sounded like a big old boom sound,“ says 12-year-old Quindarrius Boykin.

Boykin and his six-year-old brother were playing in the parking lot of Dubose Repair Shop.

When the cars slid to a stop, Quindarrius was just a few yards from them, his brother - mere feet away.

“My son almost got hit. It’s by the grace of God that I got him out of the way in time,“ says his mother, Renay.

Renay and her sons rushed to the red truck and stayed with the driver until help arrived.

“We was talking to the guy in the truck, and he told us his grandma was in the truck with him because we asked him if he was alone?“ she says,.

Boykin couldn’t see the driver’s grandmother because the force of the crash thew him on top of her.

Officers now say she was killed on impact.

“I just hate - I feel sorry for this family. My heart goes out to that family,“ says Boykin.

Both drivers - the suspect and the victim whose grandmother was killed - were rushed to area hospitals.

Doctors say neither one has life threatening injuries.

No word yet on what charges the fleeing suspect will face.
