Ala. Senate committee votes for stronger beer

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Efforts to allow the sale of stronger beer in Alabama are brewing again in the Legislature. The Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee voted without dissent Wednesday for a bill that would allow the sale of beer with up to 13.9 percent alcohol by volume.

The president of Free the Hops, Stuart Carter of Birmingham, says Alabama, Mississippi and West Virginia currently have the nation’s strictest limit on beer at 6 percent alcohol by volume. All other states have a higher limit or no limit.

Carter says the legislation would permit the sales of many gourmet bills that can’t be offered in Alabama now because they exceed the alcohol limit.

The Alabama House passed similar legislation last year, but it died in the Senate without coming to a vote.

Cannot pass a bill to remove taxes off of food in the state,BUT we can pass laws to increase the alcohol content in beer to almost the level of wine in this state.Alabama is ranked 9TH in the nation as for the total amount of taxes per 8oz.But for consumption we are ranked 32nd.So to get more taxes you need to drink more.BUT THIS WAY YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE BECAUSE 13% IS EQUAL TO 3 BUDWEISERS THAT ALCOHOL IS 3.88 PER 12 OZ.

I agree completely, Jethro.  Legislated morality is wrong.  If I want to buy beer on Sundays, or if I want to drink some well made stronger beer, I should be allowed!  Im of age, I dont drink and drive, and I like to give my tax revenue to my city, county, and state! Who are they to tell us that its WRONG to drink strong beer, but perfectly okay to drnk wine and liquor?!?!?  That makes no sense to me!

alambama is already 76 years behind the times..prohibition was repealed in 1933!! the revenue or lack thereof from alcohol sales is very much needed by all counties in the state. gov. riley equates it with meth..shows the mentality of the powers that be..even the ag thinks its ok to sue a small town for selling alcohol..with all the lieing cheating and stealing going on right under their noses you would think they have bigger fish to fry. its a power thing..they say what and how much a person can drink and thats that.. it kills me to go out of my county or worse my state to buy alcohol.im an adult i do what i want when i want inside the law.
