Candlelight Vigil Friday Night For Willie Lee Williams

BRIGHTON, Ala—Neither cold nor rain kept dozens of people in Brighton from remembering a beloved fixture in the community.

Willie Lee Williams died at the intersection of Huntsville Avenue and 48th Street on March 4th.

Christopher Williams was driving with his grandmother when another car plowed into theirs.

He was among those pausing to honor her life Friday night.

“She was nice,” Williams said.  “She looked out for other people.  She didn’t care if she knew you or not, she was willing to give you whatever she had to help you out.”

Police say Marvin Brown was driving the other car that night.

The car was stolen and police had been chasing Brown when the crash happened.

But no one focused on that here.

Instead they remembered all the good that Willie Williams did in her 86 years; the crowd a testament to her life.

“It says about her spirit and kindness, because she touched a lot of people’s lives,” friend Joseph Edwards said.  “They’re not just out here to be out here.  She meant something to everyone.”

Friends say Willie Williams was a longtime school bus driver in Brighton who impacted many lives before hers was cut short.

“We in Brighton are as a family and we’re going to stick together no matter what,” friend Horace Lee Toney said.  “We’re going to share the love with each other as miss Williams shared with us.”

She’s been gone for a little more than a week…

But Willie Williams’ memory remains strong in those who knew her.

They say it always will.
