Authorities are still trying to identify a person found dead inside a house after a fire.
It happened early Tuesday morning, February 2, 2010, in the Whitton community in southwest DeKalb County.
When firefighters arrived at the residence on County Road 23 near the Marshall-DeKalb county line, they were informed that the occupant of the residence was probably still inside the burning structure. The fire was brought under control and extinguished by firefighters as the search began for the victim.
DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and Deputy State Fire Marshall Ray Cumby arrived on scene and assisted in locating the body of the victim.
The occupant was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:00am.
Investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing at this time but it appears the fire was accidental in nature.
The body of the victim was taken to Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Huntsville for positive identification and a determination of the cause of death.
Pending positive identification, the name of the victim is not being released at this time.
