A device containing radioactive materials is missing in Birmingham.
In a news release from the Alabama Department of Public Health, the Office of Radiation Control has been notified that an industrial gauging device containing radioactive materials was lost from a pickup truck in Birmingham.
The Troxler Model 3440 device contains two radioactive sources used in measuring density and moisture of compacted soil.
It’s a rectangular, yellow box that is labeled, “Caution Radioactive Materials.”
A $300 reward is offered for its return.
The item presents no significant hazard to the finder, until the lock is broken, and the sources are removed from the internal shield.

What was it doing on the back of a pickup?  Where was it lost?  On the Interstate?  On a back road?  Or was it left on the truck parked somewhere so someone could just take it?  When potentially dangerous items are transported, they should be tied down and checked frequently to insure they are not lost.
