Birmingham Veterans Day Parade
Birmingham Veterans Day ParadeThe Magic City celebrated its nation’s veterans Wednesday with an outstanding parade. Servicemen and women marched from 8th Avenue North through downtown to 6th Avenue North as bystanders applauded those who serve our country.
For the 62nd time, Birmingham hosted the nation’s largest Veterans Day parade. Starting in 1947, the parade is the oldest in the country and folks in Birmingham have reason to be a part of the festivity.
“Because of patriotism of our community for our veterans to honor them,” said Daughters of the Revolution member Felicia McDonald.
Hundreds of units, bands and floats took part today. For many, it is an opportunity to honor those in their families that have been in the military. For others, it’s a chance to honor those that are following in their footsteps.
“This is the pride of our country; this is what keeps us safe and comfort,” McDonald said.
Many of the units represent those in active service in the military. Other participants are honoring those that went before as they themselves prepare to serve in the months ahead.
Marion Military Institute cadet William Ellis said, “It’s the proudest moment of my life. As a kid I dreamed of being an Army officer and MMI put me on the path to being that officer.”
“I’m marching for everything that I believe in. Serving in the military is something I want to do with my life,” said MMI cadet Zachary Powell.
The parade was the culmination of two days of events that represent the largest veterans celebration in America.
