Birmingham, Ala School Board chooses new president

Birmingham, Ala.—-Wednesday afternoon the board voted to put WJ Maye back in the seat as president.  He was president two years ago.  The vice president is longtime board member Virginia Volker.

New School Board president W.J. Maye told audience, “Thanks to my fellow board members for having confidence in me to make me the president.“

It took 8 days, 5 rounds of votes and six board members to say yes to WJ Maye as the new president of the Birmingham School Board.

Maye said, “I don’t think I was the compromise, I think I’m capable.“

Maye is capable. He’s been in this seat before but last Tuesday, Maye only had one vote.  This week, he had six.  Virginia Volker who was nominated last week for president, was nominated this week for vice president.  She won the majority.  Only one new board member was nominated for an office.

Maye said, “I don’t know if it was a shut out or not, but the board decided what they wanted to do and of course they decided they want me to be the leader and so I’m going to do the best I can with their help the leader.“

Now with that out of the way its business as usual for the board, officially welcoming it’s five new members to their first full board meeting.

Maye said, “Well, what we really want to do with our five new members is teach them the workings of the board… and how the mtgs are run and the kinds of things they need to know in order to be effective with our school system.“

Their job also includes interviewing superintendent candidates, a list board members are getting at this hour.

The interviews for superintendent will be on December 11th and 12th.
