Birmingham Woman Convicted of Stealing Welfare Money

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama Attorney General Troy King said
a Birmingham woman has been convicted for stealing more than $2,000
in welfare benefits - a Class B felony.

    King said in a statement Tuesday that 47-year-old Annette Hicks
pleaded guilty to 2nd degree theft of property Tuesday in Jefferson
County circuit court.

    Hicks was sentenced to one year and one day in prison.

    King said prosecutions for welfare fraud are pending in
approximately 38 Alabama counties including Blount, Bibb, St.Clair,
Tuscaloosa and Walker counties.
