U.S. Rep. Artur Davis is planning a trip to the wedding altar.

The Democratic congressman from Birmingham announced his engagement Friday to Tara Johnson of Montgomery. She coordinates community outreach for the Alabama Forestry Commission and previously was the state coordinator for the Alabama Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers.

The 40-year-old Davis met Johnson in late 2006. A statement from his office says the two plan to get married in January.

January could be a busy month for Davis if Sen. Barack Obama wins the presidential election, since Davis is the chairman of his Democratic campaign in Alabama. Davis also is considering a run for
governor and plans to make a decision early next year.
