Anniston Army Depot Reaches Halfway Mark Destorying Chem. Weapons

    The Army is halfway done destroying aging
chemical weapons stored at a military installation in east Alabama.

    Officials say the chemical weapons incinerator at the Anniston
Army Depot has now burned half of the aging weapons stockpile
stored at the site. Contractors operating the plant for the
military reached the milestone over the weekend.

    Nearly 331,0000 rockets, artillery shells, and land mines filled
with nerve agents have been destroyed.

    Critics filed lawsuits and staged protests before the
incinerator work began in 2003. The military says the work has been
done safely in Anniston and at other chemical weapons destruction
sites around the country.
