MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Bob Riley says a record number of children were adopted in fiscal year 2009 in Alabama through the Department of Human Resources.

Riley said Thursday that 676 children were adopted through the state’s adoption system during fiscal year 2009. The previous record was 412 adoptions in fiscal year 2008.

Riley made the announcement during a celebration ceremony at the state Capitol attended by parents and their adopted children.

DHR Commissioner Nancy Buckner attributed the increase to department staff focusing on adoptions.
