MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Several Alabama cities are planning
parades and ceremonies to observe Veteran’s Day on Nov. 11.
The Alabama Tourism Department says Birmingham will again hold
the nation’s oldest Veteran’s Day parade. It will travel through
downtown Birmingham, starting at 1:30 p.m.
Parades are also planned in Anniston, Daphne, Huntsville, Mobile
and Tuscumbia. Mobile will also have a free Pops Band concert at
the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park.
The Tourism Department says Athens is getting an early start on

Gadsden and Etowah County’s Patriot’s Association sponsored their Veteran’s Parade and an annual luncheon in honor of their veterans yesterday, Wednesday, November 4, 2009.
They hold their event a week prior to Veteran’s Day so local vets can also participate in the nation’s oldest Veteran’s Day Parade in Birmingham, AL.
This year, the featured speaker was LTC Michael Naugher live from Kuwait. Naugher is the commander of the 151st Chemical Battalion detachment in Kuwait from the Gadsden area National Guard unit.
A parade followed the luncheon. Every high school band in the county participated in the parade.
Next year, come on up to Gadsden and participate with us!

I completely understand your position as well. And for your son, and all of my daughter’s friends, their wives, widows and children, and their wonderful parents who bravely allowed them to go with blessings…I too will stand smartly at 11:00 on November 11 and join you in honoring our brave children. Thank you for your sacrifice. May God bless you and your family.
Thank you DL, I think there is a big differance between an individuals birthday and the rememberance of thousands and thousands that gave their life. The military runs on strict tradition, and percision. Everything has it’s exact time and place. Been that way for over 200 years. From the time you enter service to the day you exit (by what ever means) that is the way it is. On every base, station, ship, unit, at exactly 11:00 am on Nov 11th, flags will be lowered in a specific mannor to half staff. I’m just saying to really honor them, follow their standards. Let us both give thanks for your Sons service and safe return, my Son is there now for the third time. It’s for him that I will do it on time and smartly. I owe him that.
dalgast, one other comment. If you are a vet, I will say to you what I say to my son-in-law every Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, and July 4th - as well as any other time that it comes up. He is a vet who served in Afghanistan and surrounding areas in 1984-86. Thank you for protecting me and our family, for doing what I am unable to do. Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed, and we truly appreciate you and your family. And I honestly mean this, dalgast, not trying to be smart nor confrontational.
Have you ever celebrated your birthday on Saturday or Sunday before or after your actual date? It only adds length to the time for memory sharing and celebration. My dad’s birthday is November 11, and he is a Korean vet. We celebrate on the weekend, and again on his date. What is the issue here? I think it’s wonderful that cities and individuals remember and celebrate! Do you truly want our precious service people to only be remembered and celebrated one day a year, and then be forgotten for the other 364 until next Veteran’s Day??
Did you happen to see this, or were you to busy thinking of some cute response.
“ The Tourism Department says Athens is getting an early start on

dalgast, did you even read the news article?? It clearly says that the parades are scheduled for November 11,
all of us have studied history, we all have parents and other relatives who served, and we are very proud of them. We would never forget the significance of November 11. Please don’t assume that you are the only person who is aware of the specific date.
Has everyone forgotten the reason for Veterans day being on the 11th of November. For those deciding to hold any celebration on a date other then the date perscribed is an insult to all those that gave their lives for you. You are insulting all those that still lay in the fields of Europe, on some Pacific Island, on some hill in Korea, in the jungles of Vietnam, and now the middle east. To those that do this, I say How dare you. By President proclamation Nov 11th is the day to Honor our vets, not some other day that might be more convient or better for business. It wasn’t convient for those to die for you. I find it appaling that anyone would be so self centered that they decide to hold it at any other time. “The eleventh month, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh hour” has a very solom meaning, at least for those that served. I say shame on any that can’t or won’t observe this rememberance when it is suppose to be, shame, and you show no honor, no respect for doing so. It is just plain disrespectful and you should hang your heads in shame. I for one will be flying my flag on the exact moment, I will stand, salute, shead tears for my brothers in arms lost. Do it right, or don’t do it at all.
