Alabama bingo bill on fast track in Senate

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A state Senate committee has approved a statewide referendum on electronic bingo, and proponents plan to take it to the Senate now for a quick vote.

The Senate Tourism and Marketing Committee voted 6-2 Tuesday for a proposed constitutional amendment by Democratic Sen. Roger Bedford of Russellville. It would allow Alabama citizens to vote on having electronic bingo casinos in 10 locations.

Senate Rules Committee Chairman Lowell Barron said he hopes to bring up the bill for debate in the Senate on Thursday or next Tuesday. He and Sen. President Pro Tem Rodger Smitherman said the bill is a priority because thousands of jobs have been lost in electronic bingo casinos that have closed for fear of being raided by the governor’s gambling task force.

If The Govenor’s comments on this bill are correct, it typifies politics in Alabama. “Don’t do anything untill you are forced to, then panic and do the first thing that comes along.
I am pro gambling. I don’t like Gov. Riley’s task force. I think they ignore due process and act as storm troopers. But, we need a sensible law to allow the peaceful passtime for our citizens.
I have said before that you can.t legislate morality. I firmly believe this has been proven more than once in the history of this country. I feel the church should stay out of the state’s business, just like they rightfully demand the state stay out of theirs. Their job is to educate, not legislate! We as adults should have a choice to do as we choose for leisure, as long as it doesn’t victimize others. The God i learned to worship as I was growing up gave us a free will and wisdom to decide for ourselves. Anyone who denies me that right is imposing his will on me and that is not what this state and country was founded upon. Majority rule should still be important to all of us. We should demand that premise in our every day lives.
