HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Huntsville police arrested a former Athens police officer Tuesday on a charge of first-degree sexual abuse.

Huntsville police spokesman Wendell Johnson said 35-year-old Arthur Perry Gooch was booked in the Madison County jail and released on $5,000 bond.

Johnson said the case is being investigated by Huntsville police because the alleged abuse occurred in Huntsville.

Athens police Chief Wayne Harper said Gooch worked for the Athens Police Department from March 2003 until last month.

Harper said he was aware of the alleged incident but did not know when Harper resigned on November 9th whether any criminal charges had been filed.

Johnson declined to give further details about the alleged sexual abuse.
