New Treatment Quickly Eliminates Varicose Veins

A new procedure eliminates unsightly and painful varicose veins within minutes, without a hospital stay, or lengthy recovery time.

The condition afflicts more than 25 million Americans.  They’re caused when the valves inside the vein—that allow blood to flow to the heart—stop working properly.  If left untreated varicose veins increase in size, become very painful and can lead to a more serious condition like a blood clot.

If someone in your family has them there’s a good chance you’ll get them too.  Obesity, multiple pregnancies, and jobs which keep you on your feet also put you at risk.

At the Varicosity Vein Center in Birmingham, patients undergo a new technique to treat varicose veins, called the Closure Fast procedure.

The doctor guides a small catheter into the bulging varicose vein.  Powered by radio-frequency energy the catheter delivers heat to the vein wall, causing the wall to collapse.  As the catheter is removed, the vein is sealed and blood re-routes to other healthy veins.

Dr. Duane Randleman, a Cardiovascular Surgeon said, “We’ve been doing vein surgery since the early 80’s. Originally we did the vein stripping in which actually the veins were stripped from the leg which really in today’s standards is quite barbaric.”

Dr. Randleman says has been using this new “Closure Fast” procedure since the first of the year.  He said he’s had a 100% success rate with it and the patients do very well.

The actual procedure takes only minutes.  The area is numbed locally and patients are totally alert during the procedure.  The patient walks out of the doctor’s office immediately afterward with no more bulging vein, and no more pain.  Normal activities are resumed the same day.

It is covered by insurance, including Medicaid and Medicare.
